Right Sizing

Interesting term ‘right sizing’. I work as a manager in the IT team of the company I work for. Last year the company met expectations, and had a pretty good year. The IT team achieved pretty much all of its targets. However, our Director left suddenly in April. I don’t know what the circumstances were, but it seemed odd on the back of the performance we had achieved as a dept.

So, one of the senior managers was promoted to IT Director…. and he has instigated a restructure. The term ‘right sizing’ has been used. Of course this really means shrinking our IT organisation. I suppose ‘right sizing’ is the politically correct term, or the cowardly term for – ‘a few of you may be leaving’, depending on how you look at it. Which is disappointing when the company had made good progress last year.

Well, on a personal level I am secure. My role has changed slightly, but not in the direction I wanted. But at least I have a job. Some of my colleagues may not be so fortunate. However, it is all really stressful and I am finding it difficult not to be negative, particularly as I feel part of the restructure was more about ego, and people wanting to make a mark. The ego forgetting the impact that it has on people’s lives. These things do happen, and it is a case of just getting on with it, but I have been Mr Angry about it these last few weeks.

Weekend to look forward to. Ellie is in a parade tomorrow. Tricia is busy catering for a wedding. Photo of the cake attached. The roses Trish has made from icing… with a lot of patience.

Sunday evening we are off to Warwick castle for an evening of music and fireworks…. if it stops raining.

No rain so far today. For the first day in what seems like an eternity.

  1. Never nice to have to work under such circumstances.
    The cake is exquisite.
I hope it stays dry for you.  No hope of that here today.  T in the Park will be a soggy affair.

  2. Nope I can agree with Lisa on this one( Just this one though….ha ha ha ), I had the same problem when I worked for the FCO on a British Goverment contact in Iraq, my previous 8 rotations we were told about job cuts and restructuring, and I bottled the problem up and didn’t tell the family as this was a problem that I had to sort out for myself, so Now I’m working for the American Goverment on another contract, but they have no reason to down scale or cut jobs cos the Americans are in no rush to leave Iraq for many years!!! But it isnt ideal either but a year should do me to sort us out then I’ll start looking for a shelf stacking job at Tesco’s I don’t care!!! I’ll have had all the excitement I’ll have needed to do during one lifetime by then, as that’ll be clos to 4 years in Iraq by then, Seen the film, Got the medal, wearing the T shirt etc.. Lovely cake MMMmmmmmmmmmmmm………..and a great album from Genesis..
